After years of practicing conventional family law for about two
decades, J. Mark Weiss has re-tooled his practice to focus solely on
helping clients resolve their disputes without using the courts.
Prior to taking his current path, Mark had extensive experience in
most issues that face family law practitioners, settling most cases
but also gaining significant courtroom and trial experience. Since
then, Mark has had extensive training in conflict resolution, and
has become experienced assisting clients reach settlements without
using either the court or methods that involve positional
negotiations. Mark is particularly experienced and skilled in cases
involving businesses and complex property issues, including
professional practices, and complex parenting (custody/visitation)
matters.
It is Mark's philosophy to respect every client as an individual, and to
provide advice and services that are appropriate to each
client's unique family law situation. Mark understands the challenges of divorce, and focuses on helping clients achieve long-term solutions that are
consistent with t the expense of their long-term goals and
interests. That focus is enhanced by an exceptional understanding of the
law, mediation, and Collaborative Divorce skills, and other relevant principles.

Magazine. Mark is recognized and respected as a leader in Washington for his
expertise in substantive divorce law, in addition to Collaborative Divorce, divorce
settlement negotiation, and mediation.
Formerly a successful conventional attorney experienced in
litigation and conventional settlement processes, Mark has become
skilled in non-adversarial dispute resolution
processes and methods. In January 2007,
Mark had his last divorce trial to transform his practice into a full-time Collaborative
Divorce lawyer and divorce mediator.
Mark has taught and written extensively, including as a
contributor to peer-reviewed journals and books, in areas as diverse
as Collaborative
Divorce, community property law, legal ethics, business and real
estate law, and other family law and divorce issues. He consults
internationally on Collaborative Law matters, is a
nationally-known trainer in Collaborative Divorce, and is a
co-founder of the Seattle
Collaborative Law Training & Learning Center. He has received numerous honors, including “Attorney of the Year” by the Family Law
Section of the Washington State Bar Association in 2005, “Super Lawyer” by
Washington Law and Politics magazine, and the highest possible rating by
Avvo.
